Review : Over the past 24 years, this restaurant has been called Alt Heidelberg, The Bavarian Barn, The German Restaurant, and today since the new management took over on July 1, 2008, it is The Bavarian. The size of the portions are very generous. There is not much competition for this restaurant, since the Frankfurt Lavinia Restaurant closed in 2006, and this is probably the best and oldest German restaurant in Colombo. There is a wide variety of Pork, chicken and a number of large steaks. The best lamb dish has imported Australian Lamb. The best value (quantity) items are the Seafood Grill and the Bavarian Mixed Grill. There is a popular lunch set menu since July 2008, which is decent value. The desserts are now more impressive under the new management, and the impressive main menu has been enhanced by Crispy Prawn and Avocado Salad, Grilled Beef Tenderloin salad, Honey Glazed Roast Pork, Lamb Goulash, Marshmallow and Chocolate Cheesecake and Apple Crumble. For a true carnivore and Bavarian-by-proxy, this is unlikely to disappoint. Fine locally brewed beers such as Three Coins, Lion and Carlsberg are served. There are also more non-alcoholic choices, including mocktails. They improvise mocktails on request. The Teutonic vegetarian (previously rare) is not ignored, in keeping with trends in Europe. It has undergone its most tasteful redecoration yet, with `the feel, taste and satisfaction you have been longing for`. The entrance also looks much more inviting now, and the last refurbishment of the interior was completed on 28 November 2011. There is now a open-air park next door, and a small side lane where there is limited parking on the side. Open for Lunch 12pm-3pm, and for Dinner 7pm-11:30pm, including holidays (midnight on Fridays and Saturdays). Recommended.

The price range given is approximate and assumes a value-conscious diner having a main course,
a dessert and a soft drink. (i.e. not an indication of the most expensive dish on the menu).
Hard liquor and wine is not included. Wine inclusive 3-course approximate pricing is sometimes available
by clicking through for detail on Continental Restaurants.
